Research Request: Social Work Practice in Dementia Care
Research Summary:
My name is Myra Crawford-Smith and I am in my final year of my Masters of Applied Social Work, with key interests in public health and working with older persons. New Zealand’s aging population and the stigma surrounding dementia means there is a need for quality dementia care to help improve the lives of those with dementia and their loved ones. The aim of this research is to explore how social work practice can support people with dementia and their families in Aotearoa NZ. If you have experience in this field and are interested in supporting my research, then please get in touch.
Participation Criteria:
- Registered social workers.
- Current or previous experience (in the last 5 years) working with people with dementia.
Invitation to Participate:
Hello. My name is Myra Crawford-Smith and I am a student Massey University, completing a Masters in Applied Social Work. I am currently undertaking a research project which aims to explore how social work practice supports people with dementia and their families in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I would like to invite you to participate in my research project if you have current or previous experience (in the last 5 years) working in an organisation that is involved with dementia care, and I am interested in hearing your views and experience related to social work practice in this field.
The criteria for participation are that as a registered social worker you have worked alongside people with dementia. It is expected that participation in the research will be less than one and a half hours: approximately 10 minutes for initial contact; approximately one hour for the semistructured interview; and approximately 15 minutes to review the interview transcript (if you wish). I will be conducting the interview, either face-to-face (depending on your location) or via zoom/Teams. You are welcome to indicate your preference for this.
I will ensure that all information you give me, including the consent form and the interview recording and transcript, will be kept in a secure location that is not accessible to anyone other than me. The data from the project may be used in publications and presentations but all efforts will be taken to ensure that you are not able to be identified unless you have given permission for this. You will receive a copy of the research report and any publications that relate to this project. You will also be able to have a copy of your interview transcript if you wish. After the research report has been examined all the data for the project will be shredded or deleted.
You are under no obligation to accept this invitation. If you decide to participate, you have the right to:
- decline to answer any particular question;
- withdraw from the study before end of June 2024;
- ask any questions about the study at any time during participation;
- provide information on the understanding that your name will not be used unless you give permission to the researcher be given access to a summary of the project findings when it is concluded.
- ask for the recorder to be turned off at any time during the interview
This project has been evaluated by peer review and judged to be low risk. Consequently, it has not been reviewed by one of the University’s Human Ethics Committees. The researcher(s) named above are responsible for the ethical conduct of this research.
