Who we are

We are the professional body for social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Rōpū Tauwhiro i Aotearoa - the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (more commonly known as ANZASW) - was established in 1964. We are a national membership organisation, with around 3,800 members, that seeks to lift the quality of social work practice and advocate for social justice, human rights, and human dignity.

Our vision

Professionally excellent social workers and leaders for social justice.

Our purpose

To promote and support the social work profession, uphold ethical practice, advocate on matters of social policy, and advance social justice, human rights and human dignity.

Our values

Our values come from Ngā Tikanga Matatika - our Code of Ethics - which provides us with an ethical framework from which social workers practise. Read more about our values on our Code of Ethics page.
